Throughout our 30+ Years of business, we have tried and tested many different types of wood. We believe that these three are the top choice for clients but also for us through performance.

Take Sapele for example, a wood which comes from the tropical rainforests in Africa and is reddish-brown. At Dovetail Joinery, we have found it great to work with in our workshop with our tools and machines. Not only is it easier to work with, it also holds the paint better and soaks it in more than other hardwoods we have tried in the past, thus making it a robust choice for your joinery products like windows & doors etc.

​The next needs no introduction; Oak. you know what it is, we know what it is - a beautiful hardwood which boasts a light, natural look. Although you can get Oak from a few different countries in the world, we tend to use European Oak for our products. We have crafted doors, porches, conservatories and windows from this and it is a solid choice if you love that oak finish. We normally would not paint oak due to it's beauty but also it's more of a natural looking product. We would normally finish it with an oil or leave it untreated.

​Our third and final choice of wood is Accoya®. You may have come across this in more recent times, as it has been all the rage lately, due to it being a fantastic product. Accoya® is a softwood which goes through an acetylation process. This involves changing its cell structure of the wood whereby the cell walls are significantly resistant to moisture absorption. This modification reduces the wood's ability to absorb water in the cell walls by about 80%, greatly improving dimensional stability, resulting in Accoya® requiring less maintenance than most natural wood.
